Mountain biking is one of Domenica Cresap’s favorite past times. Not only does the sport allow for self-discovery and pushing boundaries, but it also has great health benefits since it’s a killer workout. Some of the best trails for mountain biking are in America’s southwest region. Here’s a list of places to get some mud on the tires.
Bootleg Canyon – Boulder City, Nevada
This mountain bike park features more than 36 miles of downhill, interconnecting trails that lead through the desert. On occasion, you can catch a glimpse of Lake Mead. Shuttles to the top of the downhill trails run throughout the year.
Turkey Springs – Pagosa Springs, Colorado
Excellent mountain biking can be found in the southern foothills of the infamous Rocky Mountains. The Turkey Springs trails are located in the San Juan National Forest and spread over more than 100 miles.
White Mesa Bike Trails – Albuquerque, New Mexico
While the White Mesa only offers eight miles of trails, the vibrant colors and beautiful scenery of the desert makes it an eight-mile ride you won’t forget. It’s advised you ride these trails in the winter to avoid the dangerous summer heat.
Odessa Mountain Bike Park – Odessa, Texas
Whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced rider, there are trails at the Odessa Mountain Bike Park for everyone. There’s a more relaxed loop that extends around the perimeter of the park and flowy elevation increases more toward the center for better experienced riders.
Black Canyon Trail – Phoenix Arizona
Also commonly known as the Arizona Outback, the Black Canyon trail is made up of 60-miles of pure desert trail. Distinct features you can expect to see along these bike trails within the Sonoran Desert are cacti, sagebrush, and stunning sunsets. Due to its vast size, there are biking guides you can bring along with you to help to navigate the area safely.
The Whole Enchilada – Moab, Utah
Moab is considered to be North America’s best mountain biking destination. There are many trails to choose from when you come to Moab, but if you want to get a taste of all the high-desert riding, canyon cruising, and beautiful scenery this destination has to offer, you’ll wish to ride the Whole Enchilada. These trails of 25-miles are not for the faint of heart or beginner-rider.
